Project growth in the mining over the next four years will see significant increases in employment, use of new technologies and ways of working. These changes will give rise to risks not previously seen. While traditional safety practices have continued to mature and bring about a significant reduction in workplace injuries / fatalities, their capacity to detect future failure modes in light of this increasing complexity is going to become more difficult. A study of Ford Australia’s transition in recent years describes this journey of realisation including a number of lessons that are directly applicable to the mining sector:

•Why safety rules and checklists are no longer sufficient

•Importance of problem solving and engagement to mitigate risk

•Emerging impact of mental health and wellbeing
