Reed Exhibitions has announced a "Women in Mining" day to recognise and celebrate the increasing role of women in the Australian mining industry as part of AIMEX – Asia-Pacific’s International Mining Exhibition 2011, to be held in Sydney’s Olympic Park, Homebush, from September 6-9.
The AIMEX Women in Mining Day will be held on Wednesday, September 7, and will include special presentations and a networking event for all women in the mining sector.
"Women are playing an increasingly important role in the mining industry," said Paul Baker, exhibitions manager, industrial events, with Reed Exhibitions.
"Whether at operator or service technicians level, through to supervisors, pit managers or engineers, up to the very highest levels of senior management, they are a major part of the industry.
"And their participation in the mining industry is only going to increase, as mines, suppliers and service providers look to attract new entrants in the face of looming skills shortages.
"Our AIMEX Women in Mining Day will include a women’s networking event, where women at all levels of the mining industry can share experiences and meet their peers, as well as offer encouragement to those new to the industry, or looking for new challenges and career paths," he said.
"It will also provide an opportunity for women looking to enter the industry to come along and learn from those already a part of it, in a supportive environment.
"As part of this, we will be working with universities, TAFE colleges and other educational institutions to encourage young women to consider a career in mining.
"The day will culminate in the Australian Mining Prospect Awards, to be held in Darling Harbour that evening, and where Reed Exhibitions is proud to be the sponsor of the Women in Mining Award," Baker said.
"As AIMEX approaches, we will be announcing further details of our women’s networking event, as well as other initiatives to promote and foster the role of women in the mining sector."
